‘New Music Now Series: Gabriella Metz – ‘Broken’

Gabriella Metz-jpg.comA striking piano-driven melody reaching a commanding crescendo of instrumentation and voice, “Broken” is the latest single from Gabriella Metz. The Cyprus born, Massachusetts-based artist delivers a characteristic touch of majesty and composition rendering the music something special. Released Sept. 4, 2019, “Broken” mirrors a brilliant background of musical training, passion and performance. A composer and arranger, Metz is considered a vocalist in jazz, pop, blues and opera music. But there is more.

The introduction to “Broken,” from the EP Breaking Infinity, is earnest and unadorned with just a piano and Metz’s precisely controlled voice. The singer’s phrasing conveys a particular sadness as the track jumps to another level of volume and vibrancy. A whirling frenzy of violins and violas adds to the magic. The accompanying 4:16 music video for “Broken” is well-matched to the stark but impressive beauty of the melody. Listening on larger stereoGabriella Metz-jpg.com speakers is a must.

Also from Breaking Infinity, enthusiasts will enjoy Metz’s debut single, “Grey,” a fast growing personal favorite. With somewhat of a Lara Fabian and Kate Bush meet Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” feel and similar to “Broken,” production on “Grey” is masterful as Metz’s singing goes from gentle to towering. The singer’s uniqueness is both powerful and sensitive with almost an art rock feel.
