Constantly at work on new material, Coreign’s latest project, a 13-song collection, echoes the tastes and influences of musicians Curry and Reto Bachman. With a little help from some friends, namely guitarists Jimmy Youngman and Wojtek Widuch, Curry and Reto jointly reign over Tranquility. Released in April on the Exquisite Noise Records label, the Swiss-based married duo presents an upbeat, hard rock approach with a touch of some progressive music tendencies. But there is more.

Perhaps the hardest working prog-rock duo on the independent recording scene, listen closely for Coreign’s musicianship during Tranquility. Featuring cover art by Elena Dudina, the album’s opening 5:17 track, “Living Hope” moves with a classic, hard rock stride. Youngman’s palm muting and general playing are clearly heard but never overpower the mix. Reto delivers the bassline, rhythmic and direct.

On the third cut from Tranquility, “Lying Hypocrite,” with Wojtek Widuch, the drums’ changing time signature makes things interesting. A fast growing personal favorite, Widuch brings a bit of a metalish profile to “The Last Dance.” “Let’s Sing,” with Youngman, is eccentric but never light. Consider the layering and production of the arrangements unified and neat, which is no coincidence. Both members of Coreign are composers, lyricists and multi-instrumentalists. While sharing production duties and writing, Curry provides vocals, drum programming, keyboards and lyrics. Reto plays keyboards, guitars, bass programming and vocals.

Another standout from Tranquility, “Unbearable Fear,” at 6:00 the longest song on the album, has a distant punkish Patti Smith quality. The final track, “Part Of My Heart,” is filled with sequencing and melody. Popular with Internet radio audiences, Tranquility follows 2018’s Eternity and Gravity, both 13-song offerings. Coreign enjoys the one word album and EP titles by design, tying into each project, though not always clearly so. Titles from previous Coreign collections include Infinity, Lucidity and Sphere, just to name a few.

While Curry brings a penchant for Evanescence and Nightwish into the studio, Reto carries Zeppelin, Cure and UFO influences. Reto once humorously said they both enjoy getting together over Dream Theater. But no matter the inspiration, Coreign is two musicians who like making music. A composer couple is how the two describe the band. All writing, mixing, mastering and production is done by Coreign.
